What’s the Best Type of AC Unit for Texas Weather?

May 16, 2025

If there’s one thing we can say with certainty about air conditioners in Texas, it’s that they have a big job to do. We need them to work very effectively through a long, hot summer season.

If you’re looking for a new air conditioner, either for a new home or because your old unit is no longer keeping up with your needs or has failed, you know there are a lot of options.

How can you choose an air conditioner that’s going to get the job done right, no matter how long or hot the summer is? We’ve got some information to help you decide.

First and Foremost

We’ve been serving the needs of homeowners in our area since 1985, providing them with the best AC units for Texas. Our team of highly-trained, qualified HVAC professionals knows what Texans need when it comes to keeping our homes cool.

Every air conditioner we recommend or install is a reliable product manufactured by a reputable company, and we sell them because we believe in their ability to stand up to Texas summers.

So rather than being concerned with the brand, you should focus on the different types of air conditioning systems that are available and which will best meet your needs.

Central Air Conditioners

Since the 1970s, most new homes, including those in the San Antonio area, have been built with systems of ductwork to accommodate central air conditioning systems. These air conditioners have an outdoor unit, usually sitting on a concrete slab beside the house, and an indoor unit, and the air they cools is fanned through the ducts and out into your home.

These are a tried, tested, and true option, and they may be your best choice if your home is already set up to accommodate one. New models continue to get more and more efficient, and they are rated with the SEER system. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit, so if you want to spend less per month when your utility bills come in, choose a high rating.

Heat Pumps

If you’re in the market for a heating system as well as an air conditioner, a heat pump is an amazing option. By flipping a switch, you can reverse the flow of refrigerant through the coils.

During the summer, the refrigerant can carry heat out and away from your home, and during the winter, it can bring warmth in, even when it’s not hot outside. These systems are highly efficient, because the motors they use to run their fans are smaller than those in traditional AC units, but they’re still very effective.

Ductless Systems

Perhaps your home is older and doesn’t have existing ductwork, and you’ve been using window AC units. Or perhaps you have damaged or deteriorating ductwork, driving your energy bills sky-high because much of your conditioned air is escaping where it shouldn’t.

Ductless systems might be the answer. Air handlers mounted on your walls conduct the cool air, and each one has its thermostat, allowing you to adjust the temperature room by room for ideal comfort.

Professional Installation

The best thing you can do for the future of your AC system is to have it professionally installed. Amateur installation leads to inefficiency, increased repair needs, and a shortened lifespan for the system, not to mention voiding your warranty before you’ve even started up your unit.
