These HVAC Maintenance Tasks You Can Do on Your Own

May 16, 2025

Last week, we explained the importance of changing your air filter and offered some guidance on how to do so. This is one HVAC maintenance task that not only can you do on your own, but you should be doing on your own. Especially considering that you typically only schedule professional maintenance once or twice a year, and your filter must be changed much more often than that.

Changing your air filter is not the only maintenance task you can do yourself though. While we don’t typically recommend DIY projects when it comes to working on your HVAC system, there are some simple things you can do throughout the year to help your system work effectively and efficiently. Keep reading to learn more.

Check Your Thermostat

As the temperatures cool, you may be getting ready to turn on your furnace, if you haven’t already. Perhaps in doing so, you’ve noticed cool air coming from your vents rather than the desired warm air. Quite often, our customers have given us a call only to discover that their thermostats were still set to “cool” or accidentally set at the wrong temperature.

While this can sometimes be attributed to a mechanical error within the component, it may be as simple as changing the programming. This is why checking your thermostat regularly is important—sometimes a problem with your HVAC system isn’t a problem with the system at all but rather with the component that controls its operation.

Clear Obstructions

If your air vents are clogged up with dust, pet dander, or other debris, then it can prevent your HVAC system from operating at peak efficiency. Ensure that you keep this area clean by dusting and vacuuming in and around your air vents at least once a month. And if you ever notice mold around your vents, be sure to call in a professional for inspection.

Check your outdoor unit too. The outdoor unit of your HVAC system is exposed to excessive amounts of dust and debris, inclement weather, lawn clippings, mulch, leaves, and even tree roots. On at least a monthly basis, you should check your outdoor unit and ensure that nothing is obstructing it as this can seriously impede its performance.
