These 2 Issues Could Be Caused by Your Thermostat, Not Your Furnace

May 16, 2025

If you’re experiencing problems with your heating, the logical assumption is that something is wrong with your furnace. What else could it be? Well, the fact of the matter is that your furnace might be doing just fine. A problem with your thermostat might be causing your heating issues!

Lack of Heat

When you’re feeling chilly, and your heating system just isn’t getting the job done, you might call it a lack of heat. This could be either that there’s no heat at all, or that there’s some amount of heating being accomplished but it simply isn’t enough. Being such a broad and general issue, many things could be causing it, and some of them have nothing to do with your furnace.

Before you decide you need professional help, there are a few things you can check yourself. You might be able to resolve the issue with just a moment of easy troubleshooting!

    • On or Off: Is it possible that someone has bumped into the thermostat and switched it from on to off, cool, or fan only?
    • Programming: If you have a programmable thermostat, could a lower-temperature vacation programming have been accidentally turned on?
    • Power: Is there any chance that the circuit breaker has tripped for the circuit the thermostat is on? Might your thermostat require fresh batteries?
    • Air Filter: This is about your furnace and not your thermostat. The air filter should be changed every month during times of frequent furnace use. A clogged air filter can reduce or prevent heating. Has it been changed recently?

If you still haven’t pinpointed the cause of your problem, you need help from a qualified heating technician who can perform either furnace repair or thermostat repair in San Antonio, TX. It may be that the thermostat is simply reading the temperature incorrectly and needs to be recalibrated.

Short Cycling

If your furnace starts up just fine, but only runs for the briefest of moments before shutting down, your home won’t get up to temperature. The thermostat will continue signaling for more heat, so the furnace will start up again, only to shut back down. This is called short cycling.

Short cycling can be a symptom of a wide variety of problems with either your furnace or your thermostat, so there’s definitely something wrong that needs to be fixed. The reason this is urgent is that this symptom can cause other problems to occur! It adds tremendously to the usual wear and tear, leading to other repair needs, shortening the lifespan of your furnace, and driving up your utility bills.

You can check the same things listed above to make sure none of them is causing the problem, but then you’ll need professional assistance. Either something is wrong with the furnace, such as an overheating motor or a failed limit switch, or your thermostat is sending faulty signals. It’s important to get to the root of the issue before you’re faced with big problems and outrageous energy costs.
