Professional air duct cleaning is something that’s generally recommended every three to five years. Ensuring your ductwork is clean improves your home’s air quality and affects how effective and energy efficient your heating and air conditioning is. If you’ve never had the air ducts in your home cleaned or you’ve recently bought a new house, it’s a good idea to contact an HVAC company to schedule a duct cleaning service. You should also watch out for the following signs that indicate it’s time to have your air ducts cleaned.
Home Is Overly Dusty
One sign that your home’s air ducts are overly dirty is if your house starts being dustier than usual. Dust, lint, pet hair and debris always end up getting inside your supply ducts. When your central air conditioning or heating runs, some of the debris then gets stirred up and blows out of the supply vents in each room. The result is that you’ll see more dust and debris floating around when your HVAC system is on and have more dust that settles on your floors and surfaces.
Vent Covers Keep Clogging Up
It’s quite common for the covers of the return vents to often get coated with debris since air and dust get drawn into them as your HVAC runs. This is especially the case if you don’t keep up with cleaning your floors or you have indoor pets. Dirty supply vents that often clog, on the other hand, always indicate the supply ducts are quite dirty. Occasionally cleaning off the vent covers and vacuuming the inside of the vents will help keep them from clogging up. Nonetheless, the only thing you can do to stop them from clogging if your ducts are dirty is to have the ducts cleaned.
Air Filter Needs Replaced Frequently
In most cases, you usually only need to replace the air filter in your HVAC system every two to three months. There may be times when the filter will get dirty more quickly because your HVAC system is running much more. Nonetheless, if you notice that your air filter starts looking black and clogging up in only a few weeks, it’s a good indication that your return ductwork is extremely dirty. Having your filters clog up constantly isn’t something you should ignore since clogged filters greatly reduce HVAC performance and efficiency.
HVAC Puts Out Musty-Smelling Air
Your HVAC system just constantly recirculates the air in your home as it runs and shouldn’t really put out any odors. If you notice that there’s a musty-smelling odor coming out of your vents anytime your HVAC is running, it’s also a good indication that your ducts are overly dirty and should be cleaned.
A moldy smell coming from your vents as your HVAC runs is a more serious issue. In this case, it typically means you have mold growing somewhere in your ductwork or possibly on your AC system’s evaporator coil. Having your evaporator coil cleaned at least yearly can help prevent and eliminate mold growth. If there is mold growing inside your ducts, it usually indicates there is some issue causing condensation to form. In this case, you’ll likely need to have at least some sections of your ducts insulated or repaired to fix the condensation issue. Eliminating the mold from within that section of ductwork is more difficult and may require having that section replaced.
Poor Airflow Coming From Your Vents
One thing many people don’t realize about dirty air ducts is the impact they can have on an HVAC system’s performance and how much air it puts out. If your ducts are clean and were properly designed/installed, the air flowing through them should encounter very little resistance. What happens is that the buildup of debris essentially creates barriers inside the ducts that create additional airflow resistance. The amount of air resistance inside a duct system is referred to as static pressure, and high static pressure is never a good thing. The issue is that the increased resistance can result in less air flowing out of some of your vents. That’s why dirty ducts often lead to hot and cold spots in some parts of the house.
High static pressure always makes your heating and air conditioning work less effectively, leading to a drop in energy efficiency. The increased resistance also forces an HVAC blower to work harder to move air, which can result in it breaking down or giving out prematurely.
Poor airflow can also result from a variety of other issues, such as a dirty air filter, leaks in your ductwork or a failing/malfunctioning HVAC blower. Nonetheless, if you notice your airflow is weak and are also experiencing any of the other issues we’ve just mentioned, it most likely indicates your ductwork should be cleaned.
Recent Pest Infestation
One reason that mice, cockroaches and certain other pest infestations can be so hard to get rid of is that they sometimes end up nesting and breeding inside of air ducts. Pests are often attracted to dirty environments, and all of the debris inside dirty ducts gives them a perfect place to nest. That means you can end up with nesting materials, pest waste and possibly even dead pests inside your ducts. This can contribute to air quality issues and bad odors. That’s why most experts will recommend having your ductwork cleaned after you’ve been dealing with a pest infestation. Having your ducts professionally cleaned every few years also has the benefit of making any pests that get inside your home less likely to nest in your ductwork.
Recent Remodeling or Construction
Most remodeling and construction projects end up producing quite a bit of dust no matter how careful the contractor is. Some of the dust and debris will then inevitably end up getting inside your air ducts, especially if you need to have your HVAC running while the work is being performed. This is why it’s recommended to get your ducts cleaned after completing any type of remodel or addition and also before moving into a newly constructed home.
