Don’t Skip This Monthly AC Maintenance Task

May 16, 2025

It’s no mystery as to why Texas residents and homeowners need a properly functioning air conditioning system. But to make sure it continues to run effectively and efficiently throughout its lifespan, there are steps you must take. This includes hiring a professional HVAC technician to inspect, service, and repair your unit as needed. Routine maintenance is also essential. However, there is one monthly AC maintenance task you can handle on your own to help your air conditioner out. That is changing the air filter.

Do I Need to?

Perhaps you figured you could just wait until you have a maintenance appointment to have your air filter changed. The truth is though, that the air filter that comes standard with your HVAC system is not equipped to handle that much debris buildup. It was designed to protect the inside components of your unit. If it becomes too dirty or clogged, your air conditioner has to work harder to do its job. Therefore, it’s inefficient.

When your air filter becomes too obstructed, you’ll notice a decrease in airflow as your air conditioner works harder to cool down your home. As a result, you’ll be losing money since your AC won’t be working effectively. Changing your air filter at least every 3 months can increase your system’s lifespan and potentially help you avoid costly emergency repairs.

3 months is the standard recommendation for changing your air filter. But if you have a significant amount of indoor contaminants, such as pet dander or cigarette smoke, then you may want to go ahead and stick with a monthly schedule.

So How Do I Change It?

This is a relatively minor task. You will want to first ensure your safety by turning off the system. Then, you’ll be able to figure out what type and size air filter you need by looking at the number and size printed on your existing filter. Lastly, you’ll want to take care when it comes time to remove the old filter, as there is 1-3 months’ worth of trapped material on it. You don’t want to release allergens and irritants into your home.
