AC Sizing: Avoid This Mistake during Installation

May 16, 2025

It’s only natural that when you go to purchase a new air conditioning system for your home, you’re going to go for the biggest and the best, while of course staying within your budget. However, while this works for many appliances, it’s not the right way to go about choosing an air conditioner. If an AC unit is too large for your home you can experience multiple problems.

When a professional HVAC technician installs an AC system, they look at many factors. They’ll look at the correct “British Thermal Units” (BTUs), which is a measurement of the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. They’ll also look at many other factors though, including the square footage of your home and how many windows and doors the house has.

Don’t Let Them Install the Wrong Size!

Be sure to ask your HVAC professional how they are sizing the unit. If they simply say they are judging by the square footage, this is not a technician you can trust. If your AC is too small, then your home can’t reach the correct temperature but will keep running to try to get there. This can cause the compressor to eventually overheat, and your system to fail.

However, being too large is no good either. In fact, too big of an AC system won’t be able to cycle long enough to remove humidity from the air and will go through a process called short cycling. This can also cause your compressor to become damaged.

Be Sure All Factors are Considered

So what exactly do HVAC technicians look for when determining the right size for an AC system? They’ll look at:

  • The type of construction in your home.
  • Type of insulation.
  • Placement of windows and doors.
  • Types of windows.
  • Number of occupants in the home.
  • Shading outside of the home.
