Why Won’t Your AC System Cool?

May 16, 2025

During the winter, our temperatures never quite do get to a point where we need our heaters for an extensively long period. In fact, given a few days here and there this winter, you’ve probably still been using your air conditioner on a pretty consistent basis. So it’s only natural with all that wear and tear on the system that something may go wrong with it.

One of the most frequent air conditioning repair calls we receive is in regards to a cooling system that won’t cool. Fortunately, we do offer quality San Antonio, TX air conditioning repairs. In the meantime though, we’d like to offer you a look behind the scenes to discover why this AC issue may be impacting you.

Is Your Thermostat the Real Issue?

Sometimes, air conditioning issues are not a result of a malfunctioning HVAC system at all, but rather a wrong setting on a thermostat, or even thermostat damage. Be sure to check and make sure that your thermostat is actually in the “cool” position, and also that it is set to your desired temperature.

In the absence of being set incorrectly, the problem could also be frayed wiring, which certainly requires the service of a professional. One last potential thermostat issue is that it wasn’t installed correctly to begin with.

Thermostat placement is very important—if it’s in a spot where it can’t detect the heat, it’s not going to signal the AC to turn on. Be sure it’s centrally located in your home, but also not in direct sunlight or you’ll have the opposite problem—it will make your house too cool!

Check Your Air Filter Next

If your thermostat isn’t the issue, the next step is to check your air filter. This filter should be changed at least once every three months, and more often if you have significant contaminants in your home such as pet dander or cigarette smoke.

If the airflow is too clogged up, you can’t expect it to adequately allow proper airflow. So even if your air conditioner is working its hardest to cool your home, if you aren’t getting the power you should be, you may not be feeling the cold air your system is trying so desperately to provide.

What About Your Power Supply?

The HVAC systems in your home account for about half of all your energy use. This means that they take up a lot of power. As such, it’s only natural that eventually the circuit breaker responsible for your AC power may trip. If it does it once or twice, the solution is as simple as resetting the circuit breaker. If this continues then you might be ready for an electrical panel upgrade.

Do You Have a Refrigerant Leak?

Despite popular belief, the amount of refrigerant that your AC system is supplied with upon installation should be enough to last its entire lifespan. So if your system is losing refrigerant, then it’s due to a leak.

You cannot simply have the refrigerant refilled—recharged—either. Our professional HVAC technicians need to find the root source of the problem to prevent a leak from happening again.
