Don’t Believe These HVAC Myths!

May 16, 2025

The internet can be a great place full of plenty of helpful information. This is a good thing, for the most part. However, sometimes too much information can cause serious problems, as not all of it is true. You can type in a question about any appliance within your home and receive pages and pages of helpful tips, “hacks,” and pointers from everyone and their brother. But unfortunately, this is how misconceptions are spread.

Fortunately, you have one San Antonio, TX HVAC company right here to bust up a few of the most common HVAC myths that exist. These myths can end up costing you money in the long run, as they cause your system to run inefficiently and thus ineffectively.

Myth #1: Your System’s Air Filter Only Has to be Changed Once a Year

Goodness no. The HVAC filter is a vital part of protecting the inside components of that system from becoming dusty and damaged. The air filter is not designed to improve indoor air quality, despite popular belief. The filter rapidly becomes clogged up with debris and therefore needs to be changed regularly—far more often than once a year.

Your air filter should be changed every 4-6 weeks during heavy periods of use and depending on the amount of contaminants in your home. Or else, the HVAC system will suffer from a drop in efficiency, and cause other serious problems like short-cycling and frozen evaporator coils. Be sure to check every few weeks to see if it’s time to change the filter.

Myth #2: Closing Vents in Unoccupied Rooms Will Save Money

We understand why this myth exists, and why it makes sense. If there’s no cooled or heated air going into a particular area, it must mean less work for your HVAC system, right? Unfortunately, no. This is one myth we have to bust wide open.

Closing room vents won’t help you save money. It will cost you more money. It can damage your ductwork, and overwork the blower fan, which doesn’t work any less when there are closed vents. Pressure within the ductwork will lead to the blower fan running for longer, which wastes valuable energy.

Myth #3: You Don’t Need Regular HVAC Maintenance

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions there are regarding your HVAC systems. Maintenance is not a luxury service. Rather, it’s a necessary service to keep your systems working in top shape, and for the longest possible lifespan.

Maintenance fends off unnecessary repairs, prevents emergency breakdowns, and keeps your HVAC systems safe—which is especially important if you have gas-powered systems. Fortunately, maintenance isn’t tough to stay on top of when you enroll in our maintenance program.
