Why Should You Regularly Change Your Air Filter?

May 16, 2025

If you don’t suffer from indoor allergies, chances are that you don’t think very much about your indoor air quality. Either that or you consider yours to be just fine. The fact of the matter is, however, that it is very important to keep on top of changing your air filter every 1-3 months during periods of use, no matter what your air quality is.

Why Is a Filter So Important?

Your air conditioning system simply cannot function as well without a decent air filter. The air filter can help to keep your air clean and free of allergens, but more importantly, it’s designed to protect the interior components of your cooling system. It stops larger particles from getting through to the blower unit and causing damage to the fan, blower, coils, or other inside components.

What Happens When the Air Filter is Dirty?

If your air filter gets too clogged with dust and debris, your cooling system cannot work as effectively as it should. This is because your AC system was designed for a set amount of airflow with each cycle, but a dirty filter doesn’t let the right amount of air in.

Another possible consequence of a dirty or clogged air filter is a frozen evaporator coil. This coil freezes when there is not enough air flowing over it. While you may think ice is normal on a cooling system, it disrupts the process that the evaporator coil goes through, restricting it from absorbing heat.

When your air conditioner can’t function well, it will work harder to do its job, and you’ll see a rise in your utility bills. Simply put, clean air filters reduce the cost of energy, and prevent costly repairs—and possibly even premature system failure—down the line.
