Furnace Failure: Common Reasons Yours Won’t Start Up

May 16, 2025

With the weather finally cooling off—and getting downright chilly at night—the last thing you want to encounter is a malfunctioning furnace. Nevertheless, this is a possibility, particularly if you haven’t had your furnace maintained regularly. If your furnace won’t start up at all, this can be even more disconcerting.

The first thing you should do if this occurs is check both your thermostat and your electrical panel. Be sure that you don’t have your thermostat in cooling mode and that it is set at the temperature you desire. Check your electrical panel also; is there a tripped circuit breaker? If you’ve checked both of these and that’s not the issue, then it’s time to call our experts for repairs. In the meantime, check out a few common reasons for furnace failure below.

Miscalibrated or Broken Thermostat

Sometimes it’s not an incorrectly programmed thermostat that’s the problem, but rather a broken thermostat. Even the smallest miscalibration can lead to a temperature misreading that will prevent your furnace from starting up.

More seriously, the issue could be that you have broken wiring leading to your thermostat. This will cause the component to lose its connection to the furnace, and of course, this will make it impossible to turn the furnace on.

Failed Electronic Igniter

Even if your home has a gas-powered furnace, it still uses a bit of electricity to run. The component that enables this is the electronic igniter, which activates the burners. This igniter typically needs to be replaced every few years, despite diligent maintenance.

Dirty or Rusty Burner

In gas-powered furnaces, the burner is where the gas jets ignite to provide your home with heat. However, if the burner accumulates a layer of grime or debris, or if rust flakes infiltrate it, then it can’t draw enough oxygen to light. Our expertly trained technicians will need to remove the burner and clean it before you can effectively use your furnace again.
