Southwest runs and timing
Atascosa sits southwest of the city, and from our shop at 6510 Blanco Rd the trip is about 28 miles — Loop 410 around the west side, then south on Highway 16 past Somerset. Figure 35 to 45 minutes, a little longer during the morning commute when traffic is heading the other direction into town. We know the area well enough to plan around the low water crossings on the creeks feeding the Medina River, which can genuinely close a road for a few hours after a hard rain. Because a lot of folks out here work early shifts in construction, trucking, and the oil patch, we schedule first-thing-in-the-morning and late-afternoon arrivals rather than assuming somebody is home at 1 p.m. Dispatch is live 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so a summer breakdown does not have to wait for Monday.
What we work on out here
The mix leans rural: ranch-style houses on an acre or more, a good number of manufactured and modular homes, and scattered newer builds. Manufactured homes usually run a package unit or a downflow furnace with a coil, and both have quirks worth knowing about — belly duct that has torn loose under the floor, crossover ducts that rodents have opened up, and returns that were never sized for the equipment somebody later installed. When half the conditioned air is dumping into the crawlspace, no amount of refrigerant will fix the comfort problem, so we check the duct before we touch the charge.
Dust is the other constant. Open pasture, mesquite, caliche roads, and field work push fine grit into everything. Filters that should last a month here look like they have been in for a season, and condenser coils pack solid enough to drive head pressure up and kill a compressor early. Most properties are on propane rather than natural gas, and plenty are on well water, so we see propane furnaces and electric heat pumps far more than gas furnaces. Winters are mild, but the handful of hard freezes each year find every weak ignitor and heat strip in the county.
